the 1960s - A MUSICAL BEGINNING

(The first instrument, performances and early training.)

Born in September of 1961, Gerber remembers listening to "Puff the Magic Dragon" at the age of 3 on the record player brought home to him by his father from the AV department at the local high school. Gerber's father, Eric, was a hi-fidelity buff and music was a major part of the household. His grandfather gave him a guitar at the age of 7. For the next 3 months, Gerber taught himself to read music and play the instrument. Wanting to learn more, he started private lessons, which continued for several years, including classical guitar training in the early seventies. While he learned musical techniques, he was also painting on canvases at this early age. Sound and visuals have always worked together for Gerber. His early interest in music and art tuned him in to the happenings and feelings of the sixties generation.

Like many young musical kids, the church provided a venue for performance. His musical performances were soon recognized as above average and Gerber was taken to local radio for live broadcasts performing with his guitar and voice. His brother, Todd, only 3 years old, joined him vocally for some of these performances. Gerber's community and family were very supportive of his artistic abilities and there was no doubt in his mind, even at this early age, that music and art would be his life work.

In 1971, Gerber's life would change. His father brought home a Theremin and an electronic random music generator, both manufactured by Southwest Technical Products. Within hours after experiencing these electronic sounds, Gerber was captivated with synthetic sound and music. Soon after this experience, he was introduced to "Switched on Bach" by ethno-musicologist, Dwight Thomas, then his fifth grade music teacher and electronic music professor, who would take him to the Indiana University electronic music lab for recitals and experiments on his own. Gerber's electronic music fascination would continue on into the seventies including the building of his own synthesizer in 1975.
