| PAIA synthesizers opened the doors to creating electronic music
for many young composers in the 1970s. Gerber was no exception.
He built his first synthesizer at 14 years old. The most use it
got was in the High School Jazz Band as a special effects device.
It had a slight problem with relative tuning across the keyboard.
But it served as a great learning tool for understanding analog
sound creation. Gerber's first synthesizer recordings included experiments in musique concrete, reorchestrating Bach for the synth and creating drawings of composition ideas and creating music based on the artistic scores. All of this was recorded sound on sound by covering up the erase head with cellophane on an old Wolensak reel to reel recorder from the AV department at his school. Unfortunately, these recordings are no longer with us. The 70s found Gerber learning and honeing his craft on a variety of instruments including: alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, bass clarinet, guitars, keyboards, voice and banjo. He also ended the decade with the rock band, Scarlet Sage. Watch for video and other stories and tidbits in upcoming updates. Check back often. |
