Albert Schweitzer said, "We are not truly civilized if we concern ourselves with the relation of man to man. What is important is the relation of man to all life." He was frustrated throughout his life over the failure of the world's leaders - political, intellectual, and religious - to come to grips with the ecological dangers. Rachel Carson, the great American ecological pioneer, chose Dr. Schweitzer's words when she dedicated her landmark book, Silent Spring, to his memory: "Man has lost the capacity to foresee and forestall. He will end by destroying the earth." |
