An Homage to Albert Schweitzer

The music of Lambarena - Bach to Africa will be a very exciting dance program. This extraordinary music - available on SONY CD - brings together the melodies of Bach with the melodies and rhythms of Gabonese ensembles of mixed voices plus soloists and virtuoso instrumentalists. Recorded in Paris, the session took nearly 100 days.

The Gabonese singers and chanters perform rituals that celebrate passage on the human timelines. Lambarena is an appropriate memorial to a man whose desire for the sacred caused him to love and heal his fellow man. Don't miss this program - you will come away exhilarated and dancing on air!

Background & Philosophy

The Village Cultural Arts Center is a non-profit organization extendng from the Village Drum & Dance Enemble. The Village Drum and Dance Ensemble was founded in 1987 by Tommy "Musa" Smith, Keith Benion and Maria Broom. The Village has grown from its original three member team to include 35 members who range in age from 4 - 45. The Village members study, teach and perform drum, dance, and story presentations from around the world with emphasis on African abd Caribbean culture. In addition to cultivating music and dance, the Village also embraces family values through practicing living and teaching Africa's rich cultural traditions, principles of character, discipline, community enrichment and cooperative economics. The Village opened its doors to the Studio in 1995, offering cultural enrichment through drum and dance classes in 1996. A Rites of Passage Program was started offering a structural guideline for the development of our young women. The Village incorporated in 1997 establishing the Village Cultural Center exemplifying the true meaning of the word "Village."
