Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach

A MULTIMEDIA MUSICAL DRAMATIZATION

This acclaimed theatrical production is a multimedia musical dramatization in one act, featuring an organist performing seven Bach selections and three actor/readers. A pre-recorded symphonic version of the Toccata in D Minor serves as the overture, and throughout the ninety-minute program 160 slides are shown, including those of Dr. Schweitzer at the organ and at work in his African hospital.

The original work was written by Thurston Moore and produced by Tennessee Players, Inc., and was premiered in October, 1995, at the Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, Tennessee. People came from thirteen states, and among those who attended were Dr. Schweitzer's daughter, the grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi, Dr. Elinore Barber from the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, and Antje Lemke, Schwietzer scholar. Actor Hugh O'Brian spoke the words of Albert Schweitzer at that performance and three organists were featured: Peter Fyfe, Andrew Risinger, and Michael Velting.

On Saturday evening before the performance, Thurston and his director-wife, Georgianna, founders of Tennessee Players, Inc., hosted a dinner for 25 special guests, and it was at that dinner that the magnificent painting of Schweitzer and Bach, by well-known portrait artist, Connie Erickson, was unveiled. It was also a historic moment that evening when, for the first time, the families of Schweitzer and Gandhi came together.

Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach will be one of the featured theatrical presentations at Symposium 2000. Memorable performances have been presented in many states since the premiere. On October 20th, on the same evening, the production will debut in France and Denmark. This is an extraordinarily inspiring evening of memorable theatre, a perfect blend of historical slides, music, and drama. World-wide performance rights are available.
